SGA Fic Recs

December Fanworks Challenge: Day 10

While I don't write for it often, one of the main fandoms I participate in (as far as reading fanfics, watching fanvids, watching the actual show, collecting merch, etc.) is Stargate Atlantis. Over the years, I've accumulated a massive collection of SGA fanfics that I love to go back and read over and over. Below, I've compiled a list of some of my top favorite stories in this fandom.

Link: Wit's End
Author: Greywolf Lupous
Characters: Rodney & John (also Teyla & Ronon in background)
Words: 20,685
Rating: T
Author's Summary: "Trust me, Colonel, when I do finally snap, I assure you, it's not going to be a pretty sight." -- Everyone has their breaking point, including one Dr. Rodney McKay.
My rec: Time loops are my absolute favorite fiction trope ever. And this fic uses it perfectly. There's humor and fun, but also so much angst and hurt/comfort. It's perfect. Rodney stays wonderfully in character to the point that I can hear all of his lines in the character's voice when I read it. Also, Sheppard is such a loyal friend and the way he tries to support McKay through this is really touching.

Link: Breaking Walls
Author: TechnoScribe
Characters: Rodney-centric (all SGA and quite a few SG1 characters also feature)
Words: 140,153
Rating: T
Author's Summary: Circumstances, and Rodney's friends, won't allow him to keep his past a secret anymore.
My rec: Somehow, the author masterfully weaves a fic that fits perfectly with canon while also featuring a completely AU backstory for Rodney. Very long fic that is 100% worth the time and investment. Hurt/comfort, angst, friendship, team as family, and a whole lot of Rodney being awesome. (There's a sequel, but it was sadly abandoned in 2015. Still worth a read, though, if you finish the first one and want more.)

Link: Of Duty, Atonement, and Redemption
Author: SGC Gategirl
Characters: Rodney McKay (everyone else too)
Words: 153,709
Rating: T
Author's Summary: The fallout from the Arcturus project might be more complicated than it seemed to be at first.
My rec: One of my all-time favorite fanfics. Set after the episode "Trinity" and written as a sort of "missing scene" between that episode and the next one. Really dives deep into Rodney's character, his relationships with the Atlantis crew, and the events that happened on Doranda.

Link: See No Evil
Author: Greywolf Lupous
Characters: John & Rodney (Carson and Radek in supporting roles)
Words: 92,511
Rating: T
Author's Summary: (AU) After his "retirement" from the Air Force, test pilot John Sheppard finds himself drawn into a world where nothing is what it first seems. Not his new employer, their groundbreaking new plane... or even his irritating co-worker, Dr. Rodney McKay.
My rec: Very fun AU story in which John and Rodney meet at a research corporation and accidentally get dragged into a world of espionage and science fiction. Mostly a slow burn friendship fic for Rodney and John, with some angsty deep dives into their characters and why they tend to push others away so much. But there's also plenty of action and suspense, plus a decent amount of sarcastic humor as these two idiots are incapable of not arguing for more than five minutes.

Link: Running On Empty
Author: Sholio
Characters: John & Rodney
Words: 94,569
Rating: T
Author's Summary: Captured, implanted with Wraith trackers, released to run and die ... such is Sheppard and McKay's fate. Now all they have to do is find each other before the Wraith find them. And Sheppard has this pesky little amnesia problem...
My rec: The idea of Rodney and John as runners is so genius, I don't know why this is the only fanfic I've ever found that explores the idea. It does a fantastic job with it, too. Very fun, suspenseful, and action packed. Some wonderful hurt/comfort and friendship moments too. And one of the few amnesia fics where I think the trope was utilized really well.
