Writing Snippet (Road To War)
I don't think I shared this here yet. This is one of the first scenes I wrote for "Road To War", originally scribbled into a pocket notebook while I was struggling through a particularly boring shift at the Health Department. Which means... this was probably written back in April or May. I just found it while going through some of my notes on the story and thought I'd share it. I think it captures pretty well what I'm trying to do with the story -- showing Kon struggle with trying to understand his TTK powers and whether or not he's meant to be a hero. (Also, I'm still going back and forth on what to call him in the fic, but I think I'll stick with Kon for now.)
Kon held them tighter, wishing he could shut out everything else, all the confusion and fear. Why couldn’t anything in his life be simple? Being held by the Kents felt safe. That was all he wanted. If only he could keep that feeling and make everything else fade away.
His eyes squeezed shut, his arms clinging tighter to the two people who somehow still trusted him despite everything. He clung to them as if this reality would slip away if he didn’t hold on tight.
Even without seeing them, he could feel their protective warmth wrapped around him. As he held on, he could sense every detail of where they were standing and how they were holding onto him. He could feel every piece of them, every molecule. Their heartbeats and steady pulses, the air moving in and out of their lungs.
And he knew how easily he could cause those functions to stop with a single stray thought. He could bend those molecules as easily as he’d done to the water last night.
Kon’s breath froze in his lungs. His arms trembled, scared to hold on to them, but terrified of letting go.
“Your power is only frightening to you because you don’t understand it yet, Kon. But it is a part of you, and it always will be.”
He shut his eyes tighter, refusing to let loose the tears burning against the backs of his eyelids.
