Luke could see the smoke long before he reached their homestead. Coming in over the north pastures, the sight was hard to miss. As was the horrifying stench carried by the wind.
He knew what it meant. Even without these clues, there was a feeling deep inside — some undeniable instinct — that told him the truth of the matter.
By the time he followed the trail of smoke to its origin, he knew what he was going to find. He'd already cycled through the stages of grief several times before even seeing the bodies of the only parents he'd ever known.
