The penthouse was quiet when Rumi exited the wardrobe, her stage costume exchanged for soft leggings and a favorite hoodie. The lights had been dimmed to a gentle glow as well. Mira and Zoey were still changing, leaving the rest of the living space still and peaceful.
Bare feet padding over thick carpets, Rumi retreated to her room. Relief eased the tension in her body as she was enveloped in the familiar scents and sounds of home. Industry parties could be fun, but they could also be exhausting. Especially this one, which had carried on until almost two in the morning. Rumi was glad to be home.
The door of the bedroom opened soundlessly. The dim light from her salt lamp and the city lights filtering through the window cast the room in a soothing glow.
She smiled at the sight of Jinu passed out on the bed. He was lying on top of the covers, a notebook dropped across his chest and pencil still in hand.
Sprawled across the end of the bed, Derpy lifted his head as she slipped into the room. He let out a chirp of greeting which Rumi quickly tried to silence by offering him a scratch under the chin. The giant tiger closed his eyes in contentment at the attention.
Jinu didn’t wake up, which was good. Normally, he tried to stay up to greet her when she got home, and talk to her until her brain was able to quiet back down from being out. It helped more than she thought it should. Tonight, she didn’t blame him for not being able to stay awake, though.
He’d been working hard on his own music lately. Even though leaving the K-Pop industry to become an indie artist meant he no longer had to adhere to ridiculous work schedules, she knew he was still putting a lot of time and effort into his new songs. It was the first time in centuries that he was getting to make music for himself instead of Gwi-ma.
Closing the notebook and setting it aside, Rumi crawled into the bed. She pulled the comforter up over them as she melted into the pillow.
Jinu stirred lightly as she settled in beside him. Golden tinted eyes peeked open, a soft smile spreading over his face.
Since the fear of waking him was gone, Rumi seized the opportunity to snuggle in against his side. He raised an arm, letting her tuck in close before dropping it around her back. A gentle weight landed on their legs as Derpy decided to join the cuddle pile. The last of the day’s tension eased away and Rumi let out a contented sigh.
“Welcome back,” Jinu greeted quietly, voice rough with sleep. “How did it go?”
Rumi smiled. She appreciated the attempt, but he already looked like he was falling back towards sleep. Stretching upward, she planted a tender kiss against his jawline.
“I’ll tell you in the morning,” she whispered. “Go back to sleep.”
He kissed her forehead in lieu of a thank you. “Love you,” he murmured as he drifted off.
“Love you, too.”
